Guide: Access to Finance for Iraqi Entrepreneurs

By John Lee.

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) has supported the Central Bank of Iraq (CBI) and the Iraqi Private Banks League (IPBL) in launching the Access to Finance Guide, co-funded by the European Union (EU) and the Federal Republic of Germany.

The initiative forms part of the Team Europe Initiative TAEUFIQ.

The guide is designed to help micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) secure financing by providing clear information on available options such as start-up loans, equipment financing and small grants. It also outlines non-financial support, including advisory services, and details the steps, procedures and timelines for accessing finance.

At the launch event in Baghdad, CBI Deputy Governor Dr. Ammar Khalaf presented the guide to representatives of international financial institutions, MSMEs and the media. A financial exhibition was also held, with banks and microfinance institutions showcasing services tailored to entrepreneurs.

Dr. Khalaf said the guide complements Iraq's National Lending Strategy and the recently introduced National Financial Inclusion Strategy, both of which aim to expand access to finance, support entrepreneurship and promote financial literacy.
