Construction starts on New Hospital in Baghdad

By John Lee.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani on Monday laid the foundation stone for a new 100-bed hospital project in the Rahmaniya-Shu'ala area of Baghdad's Karkh district. The facility is one of 16 hospitals of similar capacity being built under the Iraq-China agreement.

According to a press release, the new hospitals will feature modern designs and be fully equipped with up-to-date medical devices.

The project is being built by Al-Ezza for General Contracting, based in Baghdad, and Turkish company Neoray.

Key points from the Prime Minister's remarks included:

  • The government has completed 18 hospitals of varying capacities, while 8 more are under construction, with completion rates ranging from 60% to 90%.
  • Several long-delayed and stalled hospital projects have been revived and their causes of delay addressed.
  • The health sector remains a top priority in the government programme, both in infrastructure development and in implementing the national health insurance system.
  • Within less than three years, the total bed capacity of government hospitals increased from 43,500 to 46,900 beds, and will reach 60,000 beds upon completion of all ongoing projects.
  • A joint management system has been introduced in six hospitals through contracts with international healthcare institutions to enhance service quality.
