Iraq reviews Clean Hydrogen and Ammonia Plans

By John Lee.

The National Investment Commission (NIC) has held a workshop in Baghdad to discuss Iraq's plans for clean hydrogen and blue ammonia production and their potential impact on the national economy.

The session, attended by government advisers, academics and representatives from the Ministries of Higher Education and Industry, reviewed Iraq's vision for adopting green and blue hydrogen as part of its 2030 climate strategy. The commission said the move aligns with the government's aim to diversify energy sources and shift towards cleaner, renewable alternatives while balancing the country's oil resources with sustainable development.

A presentation by German expert Philipp Steiner outlined Iraq's progress in shaping its energy transition strategy, highlighting opportunities in blue ammonia and green hydrogen, supported by the country's energy profile and strategic location for regional energy transport.

Discussions also addressed emissions reduction, including rising carbon dioxide levels particularly affecting Baghdad, and ongoing efforts to lower environmental pressures.

The commission presented its experience with a blue ammonia project developed with a local company, which has reached the stage of obtaining an investment licence. It said work is under way to prepare a national climate investment plan in coordination with relevant ministries, approved by the Prime Minister's Office earlier this year.
