PM Promotes Investment at IBBC Basra Conference

By John Lee.

At the Iraq Britain Business Council (IBBC) conference in Basra, Prime Minister Mohammed Shiaa Al-Sudani reaffirmed the government's commitment to advancing investment in cooperation with the private sector and international partners. Held under the theme "Gateway to Iraq," the conference gathered senior Iraqi and UK officials and leading companies to explore trade and investment opportunities across sectors including energy, finance, climate and education.

The Prime Minister said "Gateway to Iraq" reflects a broader vision for Basra and other governorates to become genuine hubs for investment, trade and economic exchange. He emphasised that real progress depends on transforming dialogue into programmes and projects that improve citizens' lives.

He highlighted the government's parallel efforts to enhance the business environment, modernise infrastructure, reform the energy sector, and strengthen the role of the private sector. He also underlined Iraq's strategic position as a bridge between East and West, its major oil and gas resources, and the centrality of Al-Faw Port and the Development Road to future economic transformation.

Al-Sudani confirmed ongoing cooperation with Iraqi banks and international partners to expand financing tools supporting strategic, medium and small projects. He welcomed deeper technical and investment partnerships with experienced companies, including UK firms and IBBC members, particularly in logistics, port development, maritime transport and other services essential for economic growth.

He added that government reforms have streamlined administrative processes, expanded digitisation and reduced bureaucratic obstacles, while new initiatives seek to connect Iraqi women entrepreneurs with counterparts in the United Kingdom.
