Egypt and Iraq have held ministerial talks on expanding cooperation in digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and telecommunications infrastructure. The meeting was attended by Ahmed Khafaji, Egypt's ambassador to Baghdad, and Dr Qahtan al-Janabi, Iraq's ambassador to Cairo and permanent representative to the Arab League.
Iraq's Minister of Communications, Mustafa Jabbar Sanad, met his Egyptian counterpart, Raafat Hindi, in Cairo to discuss implementation of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the two ministries. According to Egypt's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the MoU covers digital infrastructure, digital transformation, capacity building, postal services, innovation and entrepreneurship, cybersecurity, ICT investment, and satellites.
Sanad said Iraq is expanding fibre-optic networks to homes and working to establish data centres, and expressed interest in drawing on Egyptian expertise in digital transformation, data centre management, and the development of regulatory and legislative frameworks for the telecoms sector.
The two ministers agreed to coordinate positions at regional and international telecoms forums.
Attendees from the Iraqi side included Dr Ali Nasser al-Khuweildi, head of the Iraqi Association for Information and Communications Technology; Dr Ammar Muhammad Nouri, director-general of the Planning Department at the Ministry of Communications; and Ali Yassin, director-general of the General Company for Communications and Informatics.
