The first rail service in decades between Iraq and Turkey celebrated its maiden journey on Tuesday.
It is hoped that the re-opening of the historic rail link – originally built as part of a German service from Berlin to Baghdad more than a century ago – will contribute to the fast-growing trade between Iraq and Turkey.
The 500 kilometer route from Mosul to Gaziantep passes through Syria, and takes 18 hours to complete, with a return journey scheduled for Thursday. Tickets cost between 25 and 35 euros per person.
