Dieter Much
Authorised representative and acting director of Bayern International
Sector: Promoting Bavarian exports and marketing Bavaria as a business location.
“We wanted to find out more about the security situation in northern Iraq and the standards at the trade fair grounds. Our visit has shown us that there is no need for any concern at all. Whether we return here in the autumn, as planned, will depend upon how many businesses in the Bavarian construction industry decide to take part.
The political system in the Free State of Bavaria is held up as a good example by this semiautonomous state. They are also trying to attain the same economic, cultural and social standards. And this is exactly why it is Bavarian businesses that should enter into this market with such massive growth potential. They could really give the region a chance. In the end, both sides will profit.”

“We have great interest in taking an active part in reconstruction efforts in Iraq. Northern Iraq presents a growing market. For this reason we are focussing our efforts in two areas. Firstly, in plant construction and secondly, in industrial gases. This trip has given me an overview of the situation in Iraq. Additionally I have also made contact with a business in Baghdad with whom we plan to co-operate on an industrial gas undertaking. For my next visit to Iraqi Kurdistan – which will definitely be taking place – it would be excellent to meet representatives of the industry here as well as with German firms that are already active here. One thing is completely clear to me: We can make a start here in Iraqi Kurdistan.”
Heike Helmrath
Head of trade fair sales with Kuehne + Nagel
Sector: Trade fairs
“Twenty years ago we were already organising participation in trade fairs in Baghdad. This is something we’d like to do for the north of Iraq now. For this reason, it is obviously a good idea to get to know your business partners on their home terrain and to get an overview of the trade fair locations.
And now that I’ve been able to do this, I can recommend taking part in trade fairs in this region.
Before the trip I had concerns about security here but I have completely changed my mind. The north of this nation is far more liberal than I had imagined. In fact, Erbil could become a base for our business in the rest of Iraq.”
