Belgium has contributed €1.35 million in 2025 to the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) to support humanitarian demining operations in Iraq and Syria.
According to the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the latest allocation brings Belgium's total investment in mine countermeasure initiatives in the two countries to more than €13 million since 2019.
Mine clearance remains a priority for Belgium's Federal Public Service (FPS) Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation. Anti-personnel mines and explosive remnants of war continue to pose serious risks to civilians in both countries, restricting access to roads, farmland and water sources, undermining food security and economic recovery, and contributing to displacement and reconstruction challenges.
Maxime Prévot (pictured), Belgium's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs and Development Cooperation, said demining restores not only physical safety but also enables communities to rebuild livelihoods, reopen schools and revive local economies.
