Iraq-Germany Commercial Cooperation Moves Forward

By John Lee.

According to Iraq's Ministry of Trade, officials have met to discuss implementation of the trade memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Iraq and Germany on 26th February 2026.

The meeting, held in Baghdad, brought together Sattar al-Jabiri, Undersecretary of the Ministry for Administrative Affairs; Sontka Hiren, director of the liaison offices of the German Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Iraq; and Amer al-Fahdawi, chairman of the Federation of Iraqi Chambers of Commerce.

Al-Jabiri said the MoU provides a legal framework for the operation of the German liaison office in Baghdad, and noted the importance of facilitating market access for German companies in Iraq and easing entry procedures for Iraqi traders and businesspeople travelling to Germany. He added that joint workshops, exhibitions, and conferences would help broaden economic cooperation between the two countries.

He also highlighted the Ministry of Trade's role in finalising and signing the MoU, and in submitting it to the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the necessary procedures to bring it into force.

Al-Fahdawi described the MoU as a starting point for wider economic and commercial cooperation.
