The Internet from the Sky: What Does Starlink Mean for Iraq?

When someone connects to the internet in Baghdad, Basra or Erbil, it is natural to imagine that the data travels through a telecommunications tower or an underground fibre-optic cable. But what happens when there is no nearby tower, no fibre connection and no terrestrial network?

This is where Starlink, the satellite internet service developed by SpaceX, enters the picture.

In July 2026, Iraq's Communications and Media Commission granted Starlink a licence to provide services in Iraq, opening the door to a different model of connectivity in which space becomes part of the country's telecommunications infrastructure.
