Basra Lime Plant Re-Opens

By John Lee.

A lime production plant operated by the General Company for Iron and Steel in Basra has resumed operations following the completion of rehabilitation works, with an initial daily capacity of 200 tonnes.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Minerals, the plant produces quicklime (calcium oxide, CaO) to specifications the company says exceed those of imported material. Capacity is described as expandable beyond the current output.

The company says it is ready to supply both public- and private-sector customers directly, with the aim of supporting domestic production and reducing reliance on imports.

Quicklime has a wide range of industrial applications, including use in sulphuric acid production, lime brick and construction materials, sugar refining, water treatment, iron smelting, paper manufacturing, and lightweight concrete.
