A memorandum of understanding (MoU) on water sector development has been signed between Iraq's Ministry of Construction, Housing and Municipalities and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), in a ceremony held in Istanbul.
The MoU was signed by Ammar Adel Hussein, Director General of the General Directorate of Water, on behalf of the ministry. According to the ministry, the agreement aims to advance strategic water projects in a number of provinces in central and southern Iraq, with a focus on improving drinking water infrastructure and service sustainability.
Hussein noted that the MoU builds on earlier cooperation with Japan, including a survey and data-collection project for the water sector that is intended to support prioritisation and planning for future projects.
