Iraq Courts Europe in Bid to Diversify Options after Coalition Withdrawal

Iraq is moving to forge bilateral security partnerships with Europe, with Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi's recent tour of France and Germany resulting in defense agreements.

However, the approach highlights the gap between Baghdad's ambition for greater autonomy and its limited capabilities. With the US-led Coalition mission due to end on Sept. 30, the question is what Europe can realistically add-and what Iraq can deliver without deepening its reliance on foreign partners.
