Southern Iraq (South Central and South East Regions)
The South Central Region reported a total of 15 incidents during the period, an increase on last week’s figure of ten, and almost double the 2012 weekly average. Incident levels increased this week largely due to the targeting of Shia pilgrims travelling through the province en-route to Karbala for Ashura. The region was targeted by multiple VBIED attacks, as part of the second wave of coordinated nationwide attacks on 29 November. In total, there were three VBIED and seven IED detonations spanning three provinces. Two VBIEDs detonated in the city of Hilla, close to Shia pilgrims and the city of Karbala was also targeted by a VBIED which detonated under a bridge. It was later reported that the device was pre-positioned in a garage before Ashura in order to negate the security surge. Other areas also witnessed attacks, with a number of potential attacks also being prevented by ISF operations. In Iskandariya, ISF discovered an improvised rocket launcher aimed at a main route, and an IED detonated against an ISF patrol.
The South East Region reported just three incidents during the period, another decrease on last week’s figure of five and less than half the 2012 weekly average. The South East Region escaped the coordinated attacks of 27 & 29 November, with the most significant event being the shooting of a policeman north of Nasiriyah. In Gharraf, an oil company camp was reported to have been stormed by a large number of people following a mis-understanding about religious celebrations taking place. Although no-one was injured, significant damage was caused to offices and accommodation. This week did see an increase to the VBIED threat in Basra province following reports that AQI were planning attacks. This increase in posture was more likely related to the coordinated attacks seen elsewhere in the country over the period.
