Beleaguered by low oil prices, Iraq moves to curtail customs evasion
A new scheme aimed at combating customs evasion has triggered nationwide protests and strikes in Iraq. Traders say the new regulations have caused a sharp rise in import duties that are choking small businesses. Trade organizations and parliamentarians have meanwhile called on the government to reverse course.
The crisis has focused blame on caretaker Prime Minister Muhammad Shia' Al-Sudani, who is in parallel actively navigating a critical phase of government formation.
