German airline Eurowings, a subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group, is to begin four direct weekly flights to Baghdad from December 2026, operating two services from Berlin and two from Düsseldorf. According to Iraq's Ministry of Transport, this will mark the first return of German passenger carriers to Iraq since the early 1980s.
The ministry said more than ten German airlines have submitted applications to operate flights to Iraq in the coming period.
Over the past three months, Baghdad International Airport has received multiple visits from technical and operational delegations conducting on-site audits of airport procedures and systems to verify compliance with international standards for airport security, safety and operations.
The ministry said the entry of a Lufthansa Group subsidiary into the Baghdad market is expected to open the way for other European airlines to consider launching additional direct routes to the capital.
