Iraq has begun implementing extra security measures to protect oil fields in and around the south-eastern city of Basra, security sources announced on Wednesday.
Iraq is planning to establish a pipeline between the southern Iraqi city of Basra and the Iranian city of Abadan to expand its exports capacity, Econews reported.

Companies have until 5 May to prequalify to compete for the rehabilitation and expansion of the existing export facilities and pipelines in the southern oil hub city of Basra, Reuters said.

Negotiations for renewing the Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline agreement, which expires at the end of March, began in 2009 and were sealed this month by Iraqi Deputy Oil Minister Ahamd al-Shamma and Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz.
The delay in the renewal of the agreement for the operation of the Kirkuk-Ceyhan oil pipeline has served a timely reminder of the many obstacles that still have to be overcome to fulfill its potential, both as an export route for Iraq and as a source of transit revenue for Turkey.
Turkey strengthened its energy ties with Iraq by renewing a contract to import Iraqi oil to the Turkish Mediterranean Sea port of Ceyhan, where Azerbaijani oil also arrives via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline.
