Northern Iraq (North and North Central Regions – including the KRG)
The Northern Region reported 26 incidents during the period, the same number as last week. Thought this remains slightly above the 2012 weekly average, it is considerably lower than incident levels in the region seen over the Ramadan period. As is normal, the majority of violence was witnessed in Mosul, although outlying population centres in the Jazirat Shamar region of northeast Ninawa continued to record an increasing proportion of attacks. The deterioration of security on the Syrian border is likely to be the main driver for increasing incident rates in these areas. It is possible that some attacks are attributable to smuggling activities as the demand for weapons in Syria grows. In Mosul itself, the majority of incidents occurred in the western half the city. In all, there were sixteen explosive incidents, including a suicide car-bomb (SVBIED) and ten shooting attacks.
The North Central Region reported 29 incidents during the period, a slight reduction on last week’s figure of 33, and below the 2012 weekly average of 24. Whilst Diyala and Kirkuk recorded incident figures roughly in line with established metrics for 2012, a reduction in reported activity in Salah Ad Din was the main reason for the drop in figure this week. In areas north of Baghdad and northeast Anbar (both believed to be key supply lines into Salah Ad Din), ISF operations may in part explain this reduction. Incidents this week included fourteen explosive related attacks, seven shootings, two kidnaps, three indirect-fire (IDF) attacks in Kirkuk, and a complex attack near Dujail, Salah Ad Din.
Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) – No significant incident were reported during the period in the three provinces that comprise the KRG (Dahuk,Erbil and Sulaymaniyah).
