Iraqi Truck Makes First Round Trip to Turkey Under TIR Agreement

By John Lee.

An Iraqi-registered truck has completed a round trip to Mardin in Turkey under the TIR international road transport convention, loading goods there before returning through Iraq to Amman, Jordan. According to the Ministry of Transport, this is the first time an Iraqi truck has made such a journey under the agreement.

The trip was made using a carnet issued by the General Company for Land Transport, a subsidiary of the Ministry of Transport. Murtadha Karim al-Shahmani, Director General of the company, said the milestone follows a first Iraqi truck journey to Central Asia approximately two months ago, and that around 10,000 trips have now been made across Iraqi territory under the TIR convention to date. He added that the number of trips has risen significantly since June, expanding opportunities for Iraqi carriers and strengthening Iraq's role as a trade corridor between east and west.

Al-Shahmani noted that the results reflect the ministry's focus on cross-border transport, international agreements, and electronic procedures, with coordination between the General Company for Land Transport, the Technical Department, and the ministry's international contact point.
