Strategic Power Projects Under Review with Siemens

By John Lee.

Three strategic high-voltage electricity substations are under development in Karbala, Najaf and Baghdad as part of Iraq's power transmission upgrade programme.

Progress on the projects was reviewed at a meeting between the General Company for Electricity Transmission in the Middle Euphrates and Siemens, which is delivering the work under Phase Two of a cooperation principles agreement.

The meeting, attended by representatives of Siemens in Iraq and the German loan management team, along with officials from the ministry's technical and investments and contracts departments, reviewed implementation timelines against agreed contractual schedules.

The projects cover the construction of 400kV substations at Al-Dhafaf in Karbala, Al-Abbasiya in Najaf and Al-Karkh in Baghdad, intended to strengthen grid readiness and improve interconnection across the Middle Euphrates provinces.

The meeting was chaired by the company's Director General, Engineer Mohammed Abdul Aziz Youssef.
